Coconut Oil for Hair Damage Repair - The Truth About Coconut Oilūü••

If you're looking for softer and more lustrous hair, you might already be adding coconut oil into your hair care routine stat! But did you know if you suffer from dry scalp and dandruff, then you might need to try out coconut oil too. It is one of the best remedies for these issues. Coconut oil is packed with fatty acids that are amazing for hair, nourishing for scalp and suitable for all hair types. Keep reading to learn why you should be looking for coconut oil as an ingredient in your hair care to help repair everyday damage, improve hair texture, restore shine and improve your scalp health.

Coconut Oil for Dry Scalp & Dandruff Treatment

Coconut oil has been shown to help manage a dry, itchy scalp - helping to improve scalp irritation and flakiness. Coconut oil is packed with fatty acids. Research has shown that coconut oil may help to restore the skin's barrier function, an important benefit for a dry, flaky and inflamed scalp. Coconut oil is also a good source of antioxidants, which provide anti-inflammatory benefits - another great benefit for a dry scalp.

Coconut Oil Increases Hair Shine

Coconut oil in hair lays down your cuticles on the outside of the hair shaft. When your cuticles are moisturized and sealed, that's when your hair looks much shinier and vibrant. It also protects the keratin proteins inside of your hair shaft, so having shiny hair means the integrity of the inside of your hair is also intact.

Coconut Oil Prevents Frizz

Frizzy hair is one of the main reasons why people start to look into our hair repair products. Too often do we believe that hair is "just the way it is" without the understanding that frizzy hair is actually a sign of hair damage. The GOOD news about that is that means frizzy hair is fixable!

Frizziness is caused when the cell membrane complex swells with water. This is where you want to have moisture, but too much can cause the bonds to weaken and become swollen, which then lifts the cuticles and loses its smooth texture. Because coconut oil helps seal the cuticle, it reduces water absorption into the hair, especially in humidity. Reducing water absorption into the hair, helps to smoothen the cuticle and stop frizzy hair.

Coconut Oil for Healthy Hair Growth

Thinning hair happens most often as we age. Genetics, stress, diet and medications are all potential reasons for hair loss. Not all hair loss is due to hair falling out, it can also be due to breakage. When we color, bleach, heat or even work out, hair damage can occur and lead to breakage. Hair breakage can also happen more easily as we age as the hair's circumference gets smaller because there is less protein inside of the shaft.

Coconut oil is rich in fatty acids that help protect and nourish the hair follicles. This makes it a perfect choice for those who suffer from dry scalp and hair loss. It helps prevent damage to the hair shaft and promotes healthy growth. When a hair treatment with coconut oil is applied to the scalp and used as a conditioning agent, this strips buildup giving your hair room to grow with added protein. Additionally, when compared to mineral oil or sunflower oil (the oils most commonly used in cosmetics), it penetrates much deeper to protect the protein inside the hair shaft. Thus, it helps more protein to stay inside of the hair, as well as to grow out with more protein in it.

Coconut Oil for Damaged Hair

In a 2015 report, researchers noted that coconut oil is similar to the natural hair proteins and has a unique ability to penetrate the hair shaft. Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid. This specific fatty acid is incredibly important because it not only is a short carbon chain, but it is also linear. This short, linear shape allows coconut oil to penetrate the hair more effectively than many other oils, however Babassu oil is another natural oil rich in lauric acid. By penetrating the hair, coconut oil can reduce the amount of water absorbed into your hair and help protect keratin protein to limit everyday hair damage.

Hair can take on many types of damage, one or more than one at a time. Each source of damage does something to your hair that you may find cause to complain about. For example, UV damage causes dull hair due to the oxidation process of melanin in your hair, and the lifting of the cuticle which reduces shine. Aging, a process that none of us can avoid, causes thinning, wiry, and dull hair. Heat damage, chemical damage, pollution damage, and overusing hair care products are also part of the 6 main sources of hair damage.

Coconut for Fixing Split Ends

Split ends are just another word for breakage, but on the ends of your hair. This is the section of your hair that has incurred the most damage, is the driest, weakest part of the hair shaft.

Just as we've mentioned time and again, coconut oil goes straight to the core, protecting protein chains on every level of the hair shaft, and then laying down the cuticle to seal it off. For your split ends, this means repairing those broken bonds and making it look healthy and shiny, again.

Coconut Oil for Detangling Hair

When your hair is tangled, it is often because the cuticles are lifted up and catching onto each other. The lifting of the cuticle is potentially caused by many types of damage and is the reason why hair not only tangles, but also causes the cell membrane complex to swell with too much moisture (frizziness) and lose shine.

Coconut oil hair masks help to lay down the cuticle for smoother hair and reduce tangles, frizz, and increase shine.

Can You Use Coconut Oil for a Flaky Scalp?

Coconut oil for the scalp has an amazing effect on the skin. While the scalp is somewhat different than your skin, it helps as much with your scalp hydration. However, one thing your scalp endures differently than your skin is flakiness due to unique fungi. Fungi that live in your scalp make it itchy and reduce the healthy oils. Coconut oil reduces these fungi and helps balance your scalp microbiome, relieving the itchiness and decreasing flakes. A healthy scalp is the first step to healthy hair!

Can Coconut Oil Condition the Hair?

Many people love the deep conditioning properties of coconut oil. A coconut oil hair mask penetrates deep into the hair shaft because it is a principal fatty acid with a straight chain and weighs less than sunflower or mineral oil. Basically, it goes farther, but offers the same benefits as the sunflower and mineral oils. This is why it works so well as a conditioning agent!

Can Coconut Oil Protect Your Hair from the Sun and During Swimming?

When your hair is exposed to the sun, and then you swim, you are priming It for lots of frizz and loss of shine and vibrancy. This kind of damage may seem temporary, but once you open the cuticle and expose it like that, the only way to fix the damage is to replenish lost proteins and vitamins and seal it back up. Coconut oil for hair has the right combination of fatty acid chains to do a perfect job of replenishing necessary nutrients, and then sealing it by laying down the cuticle on the outside.

Can Coconut Oil Prevent Hair Protein Loss

When we use hot tools, wet brush, expose our hair to pollution, and all other sources of damage, the proteins that make up the strength of our hair and keep in hydration break. Keeping these bonds together is the only way to have beautiful, strong, luscious locks. Luckily, something as quick and easy as an at-home treatment with coconut oil can replicate those proteins and repair broken bonds.

Coconut Oil Hair Benefits + When to Use Coconut Oil

Use Coconut Oil When Heat Styling Hair

Each time you use a hot tool such as a blow dryer, straightener, or curling iron, you have to protect the cuticle of the hair shaft to prevent the cuticle from breaking, buckling, and becoming porous. Put in a small amount of coconut oil in your hair before and after you style your hair to ensure protection.

Use Coconut Oil as a Leave-In Finishing Treatment

Coconut oil for hair is a great on-the-go oil for your hair for a few reasons. First, it is very accessible (you can literally find it at any grocery store!). Second, it is much more solid at room temperature than other types of oils. All you have to do is scoop some into a small container with a lid and keep it in your bathroom for when you need it!

Use Coconut Oil for Swim Protection

Like me, you probably grew up being told that you need to put conditioner in your hair before swimming to protect it from chlorine damage. I never did that because I didn't like the feeling of conditioner in my hair as a leave in. Because coconut oil is solid at room temperature, coconut oil in hair is light and keeps it nice before jumping in and can offer the same protection. Win-win!

Use Coconut Oil for Sun Protection

Protein degradation is most commonly caused by sun exposure. In a 2008 study in Croatia, researchers found that UVB radiation causes protein loss and UVA radiation causes color loss. Protein loss causes the hair shaft to weaken, while color loss shows how deep the UVA rays go as melatonin is in the core of our hair shaft. A coconut oil hair mask goes deep and protects every part of the hair shaft to keep it from incurring damage. So, add a little bit of oil to your hair before going out to enjoy the sun!

Which Kind of Coconut Oil is Best to Use for Hair

Not all oils are created equal. Make sure you use extra virgin coconut oil rather than refined. Refined coconut oil means it was harshly processed and contains chemicals and preservatives. At room temperature, it is often a liquid and completely clear in color. However, it may be bright white when solid (showing off the bleach used in creating it). Refined coconut oil is made from old, more stale coconuts and not while they are at their peak.

Is Coconut Oil Bad for Hair? Which types?

Virgin, or unrefined, coconut oil is made from a fresh picked coconut and is minimally processed and contains no bleach or other chemicals or preservatives. At room temperature, it is a very soft solid, and can melt simply when in contact with your hand. When melted, it has more of a golden hue to it. Virgin coconut oil is made from coconuts at their peak ripeness.

How to Make a DIY Coconut Oil Mask at Home

If you have damaged hair, then you need to use coconut oil. It will not only repair the damage, but it will also make your hair stronger and healthier. You just need to follow these simple steps:
1) Mix one tablespoon of coconut oil with two tablespoons of olive oil.
2) Apply the mixture to your hair and leave it on overnight. Tip: Braid hair to put it up into a hair cap (check out ours!) before going to bed.
3) Rinse off the next morning and shampoo your hair.
4) Follow up by using conditioner.
5) Wash your hair again and repeat the process until your hair is soft and shiny.
6) Finally, apply some coconut oil to your ends to seal the moisture into your hair.

The Best Coconut Oil Hair Products

This is critical. Not all masks are created equal! Your hair likely needs some serious nursing back to health, and unfortunately coconut oil alone won't solve all of your problems (and doesn't last long).

So, what if I told you there was a treatment out there that is significantly cheaper than a salon keratin or protein treatment, but much more effective than any other line of products you've tried?

Our products were not designed for specific types of hair, but rather to combat your specific type of damage. This means that you can use them no matter what type of hair you have!

Coconut oil alone isn't for everyone- if you have excessively oily hair, it might cause more problems than you had before using it. Not only that, but if your biggest concern is split ends, but not generally dry hair, then applying coconut oil could just make the rest of your hair shaft greasy.

Coconut oil is a part of each of our products for added moisture and is counterbalanced with the right formulations to make sure you achieve the right balance in your hair to make it beautiful. Historically, coconut oil has been used by communities local to the harvesting area to treat hair. Since then, you see it in almost any type of product from hair care to skincare to foods. The overall benefit of coconut oil completely justifies the work that goes into harvesting it. Here at SAVE ME FROM¬ģ hair care, we love to be open about what we put in our products (because, well, it does go into your hair and onto your scalp, after all) and we feel strongly that each ingredient should outlast all of the alternatives out there. That‚Äôs why we use¬†coconut oil¬†in 5 of our 6 products. We‚Äôve done the research, and it really just blows all competition out of the water, and we want you to know how that‚Äôs possible.

In Ayurvedic medicine, coconut oil was used for many purposes: ingestion to treat respiratory issues and diabetes, to treat eczema and other skin diseases, and as a way to strengthen and nourish the hair. Coconut oil was considered to be superior to all other oils in Ayurveda in treating hair, particularly!

Mineral Oil and Sunflower Oil

Let’s talk about the alternatives for a second. The most common alternative is mineral oil. It’s cheaper, considered non-greasy, but it has no attraction for proteins because it is a hydrocarbon. This means that this oil does not enter the hair shaft. This means that whatever other nutrients mineral oil could be doing to benefit or otherwise repair your hair won’t be able to get in to do its work very well.

The next most common alternative is sunflower oil. Sunflower oil is odorless and nonfreezing. But again, due to its double bonded system, it doesn‚Äôt infiltrate the hair fiber. It may make your hair ‚Äúappear‚ÄĚ healthier and shinier, but you will be stuck using this oil over and over to achieve the same result, rather than repairing the damage being done to your hair by other elements.

The Science Behind Coconut Oil

Okay, you‚Äôve probably guessed where this is going‚ÄĒcoconut oil doesn‚Äôt just do everything that mineral oil and sunflower oil can (make your hair look shinier and healthier) but its structure DOES penetrate the hair shaft allowing nutrients to soak into the deepest layers of your hair and repair the damage being done! This is why coconut oil has become a no brainer for repairing your damaged hair.

The results of this study of hair fibers being exposed to different types of damage and then treated with the different types of oils is incredibly revealing to this fact. First, the researchers took different types of hair: curly, wavy, straight, bleached, and permed. They lined them up with each type strapped to a device and then each was subjected to different types of damage. Boiling water was the first type of extreme situation, then UV ray exposure, and then exposure to bleach in a salon setting. WITHOUT FAIL, the protein loss of the damaged hair tresses was significantly lower in all of the damage categories and was especially lower when the hair was treated with coconut oil as a leave-in before the damage occurred. Second was sunflower oil (though by a small margin compared to mineral oil) and mineral oil came in last place when it came to preventing protein loss (aka hair damage).

This isn’t just a happenstance for us- this type of research IS the reason why we carefully chose coconut oil to be part of our haircare line. The unique structure of the medium chain fatty acids and straight chain fatty acids in coconut oil are an unmatchable force to protect and repair the damage that your hair is enduring every day.

The Ayurvedic Spice That's Changing Everything

It's worth mentioning the hair reparative benefits of Fenugen. Inspired by Ayurvedic medicine, we've harnessed the fenugreek's rich phytonutrients including medium and long chain fatty acids, terpenoids, polyphenols, phospholipids and vitamins A, C and B variety vitamins and paired these with bio-boosters like ubiquinone (also known as Coenzyme Q10 for hair), organic karanja (also known as pongamia) and medicum chain triglycerides (MCT’s derived from coconut). Through a patented eco extraction process, we've magnified these phytonutrients into our clinically proven technology. Fenugen possesses the rich nutrients of fenugreek seeds in a complex 5x more potent in polyphenols. These nutrients include Vitamin A, B Vitamins, Vitamin C and more. With consistent, long-term use, hair bonds are rebuilt, hydration is restored helping to reduce frizz, the scalp is energized and nourished from within allowing hair that's more resistant to damage to emerge. Rooted in Ayurveda, our Fenugen is clinically proven to transform hair from tip to root, inside and out.
