Does Retinol Promote Hair Growth? Retinol Hair Benefits with SAVE ME FROM Scalp Health + Hair Repair

Retinol for Hair Growth - from Skincare to Scalp Care

Skin care ingredients found in hair care products is a trend that we’ve grown to know and love! Whether it’s micellar-water shampoos, scalp scrubs with alpha hydroxy + salicylic acid, or from our entire hair-care line inspired by trending skin ingredients - using skin savvy ingredients into haircare works wonders to boost scalp health, aid in hair growth + protect hair from damage.

While much of the hair-care world has already dabbled in reliable favorites such as hyaluronic acid, kaolin clay, and even vitamin C (all of which can be found within SAVE ME FROM!), retinol in hair care has been a relatively untapped phenomenon. But does the scalp + hair benefit from the gold standard of anti-aging in skin care?

What is retinol and what does it do?

When used in skin care, the vitamin A derivative retinol, helps to promote growth of skin cells, encouraging cell turnover and stimulating collagen production. This targeted ingredient reduces the appearance of aging skin, uneven texture, and age spots. In addition, it also smooths and refines texture, and makes the skin more plumped and firm.

But retinol does not come without downsides, including potentially flaky skin, redness and irritation, purging (where clogged pores come to the surface) and sensitivity, which is why it's super important to wear SPF to avoid sun damage to the skin.

You have probably have heard that retinol is a staple skincare ingredient for combatting skin issues like wrinkles and acne – but less people are aware of the benefits it can bring to your scalp and hair. Retinol is effective in boosting scalp health, hair growth, and reducing hair loss due to its rebalancing, decongesting and stimulating properties.

Does retinol make hair grow faster?

Recently some haircare brands have started to formulate hair products with retinol, claiming increased growth, a reduction in hair loss and all-round healthier, stronger hair. This makes sense, as the skin on the scalp is essentially an extension of your facial skin and it should be treated + cared for in similar ways!
In addition, the scalp and skin on the face have the highest density of oil glands, and neglecting caring for the scalp, for example forgoing washing or allowing product build-up from hairspray, wax, serum, contributes to an unhealthy scalp, which is the  foundation for overall health of the hair. If there's build-up of dry skin, product residue, or oxidation (from being exposed to the elements such as the sun and environmental pollution) this can be potentially damaging to the scalp, hair follicles, can lead to slower hair growth and even hair loss.

Retinol Benefits for Scalp Health + Hair Growth

Recent research has shown that retinoids can work to improve the condition of the skin on the scalp and promotes hair growth, reducing hair loss, helping to decongest hair follicles, as well improving the absorption of other ingredients aimed at boosting hair growth.

Retinol is a vital component for the product of red blood cells, which are the carriers that bring nutrients to all of the other cells in your body. If this process is interrupted, the hair follicles may not get the oxygen and other nutrients they need in order to produce healthy, strong hair fibers.

In addition, the hair follicles contain some of the most rapidly dividing cells in the body. As the cells divide, they layer new hair fiber cells onto the root of each shaft, pushing out the strand and causing faster hair growth.

New skin cells form in the base layer of your skin and push their way up through the layers as new cells form beneath them. Retinol aids in this process so that old skin cells on the scalp can slough off faster rather than remain on the surface, building up and clogging your hair follicles.

Overall scalp health is important when treating hair loss, in addition to using hair growth treatments at home. The health of the scalp is also contingent upon external as well as internal factors. The hair follicles need the right nourishment and the scalp also needs to maintain the right pH balance for hair to grow.

With all this considered, does retinol have the potential to work its magic in hair care?

Some bad news: the side effects of using retinol on your face go for your scalp, too. You can experience sensitivity, redness, and irritation, which can make the situation worse resulting in hair loss or thinning.

Using SAVE ME FROM's hybrid scalp serum + scalp treatment three to four times weekly at night will help to keep the scalp healthy and moisturized resulting in a healthy scalp for promoting optimal hair growth and less breakage.

Since retinol (vitamin A) can be drying, it's important to keep the scalp hydrated. Using a nourishing scalp treatment that are free of mineral oils and parabens, or using oils such as karanja or coconut oil with antimicrobial benefits (which can be found within SAVE ME FROM's clean + clinically tested formulas) help soothe, reduce inflammation, and balance the scalp.

In addition, this study found that a deficiency in vitamin A can lead to metaplasia of keratinized epithelia including the hair follicle and atrophy of the sebaceous gland. Although vitamin A is an important vitamin for hair growth, supplementing a diet with too much vitamin A can actually lead to hair loss.

Eating a diet with foods rich in vitamin A, will help you get the proper dose of this important nutrient. Eggs, berries, spinach, fatty fish, oysters, soybeans, sweet potatoes, peppers, avocados, nuts + seeds all pack the essential nutrients that affect the health of your hair including vitamin A as well as vitamins B, C, D, and E, along with iron, protein, biotin, and essential fatty acids.

cup of spinach provides up to 20% of your daily vitamin A needs!

A diet lacking the right nutrients may slow down hair growth that can lead the hair thinning and hair loss. Although these nutrients may help treat hair loss and promote the rate of hair growth, topical treatments can be effective for promoting hair growth at home.

Fenugreek Seeds vs. Retinol for Hair Growth

Fenugreek, an Ayurvedic herb that has been used for centuries for it's health + medicinal benefits, is one of the oldest medicinal plants due to it's exceptional medicinal and nutrient profile. Fenugreek seeds contain a substantial amount of fiber, phospholipids, glycolipids, oleic acid, linolenic acid, linoleic acid, choline, vitamins A, B1, B2, C, nicotinic acid, niacin and many others functional nutrients which have been used as a home remedy to promote scalp health, aid in hair growth and promotes thicker, shinier hair as a result.

This antioxidant rich herb rich is a natural alternative to retinol as fenugreek seeds are a rich source of vitamin A, which can aid in scalp health, boost hair thickness + reduces hair loss.

Recent studies indicate that phospholipids, found within fenugreek seeds, not only serve as structural elements, but that they also play an important role in regulating cellular functions, shown to support the regeneration of hair follicles and promote hair growth.

Fenugreek seeds are a rich source of iron and protein — two essential nutrients for hair growth.

To add on, research has shown that fenugreek seeds can be a natural method of treating low to moderate hair loss in men and women. Plant compounds found within fenugreek, may interact with a chemical in the body known as DHT (dihydrotestosterone). If DHT attaches itself to the hair follicles, the result, sooner or later, would be hair loss. Fenugreek may slow down the ability of DHT to attach to the hair follicles.
